Firm Handshake, A Way To Landing Your New Job

Developing a firm handshake is a vital to landing a new job, according to new research.

Experts say unemployed people often miss-out on landing a new position because they make a bad impression with the commonplace ritual.

And a study found that one in five people suffer from a 'limp fish' grip which means they are downgraded or dismissed in the first five seconds by interviewers.

In a survey of 2000 people nearly 20 per cent admitted they judge people instantly on the quality of their handshake.

A third of those surveyed said a 'limp fish' grip makes a bad impression with 36 per cent saying it suggests a nervous and introverted personality.

Body language expert Judi James said: 'The handshake is one of our most important and basic forms of communication.

'It's part of our animal survival response in terms of submission and bonding signals, combining messages of status, power, courage, honesty, trust, confidence and even health in one swift touch.

'Getting it right won't guarantee you will get your dream job
.

'But when they get it wrong people make a bad first impression that can mean they miss out on jobs
.

'The same is true when it comes to making friends and also in romantic encounters.' The research was commissioned by hand dryer manufacturers Airdri.

John Curzon, General Manager of Airdri, added 'With the UK deep in recession and employment levels at an all time high it's now more important than ever to do everything you can to present yourself make the best possible first impression.'
